San Miguel de Allende Shopping
The list of stores, boutiques and galleries that make up the San Miguel de Allende shopping scene is too extensive to give here, but there are dozens of shops, art galleries and boutiques within a 10-block radius of the main square, the Jardin. If this weren't enough, local artists have refurbished a huge old factory on the outskirts of town, Fabrica la Aurora, to feature art, furniture and décor. Enjoy, shipping is easy to arrange!

CERAMICS
San Miguel Allende
Guanajuato

The state of Guanajuato—in which San Miguel is found—is well known for its colorful ceramics, and two shops are especially highly regarded. At Arcilla (5A Recreo, 415 152 6417), look for a range of earthenware styles—from Asian-influenced minimalist pieces to more elaborate designs steeped in the local aesthetic tradition. Terra (6 Cuadrante, 415 152 7754) specializes in pots and planters for the garden.

CLANDESTINO
San Miguel Allende

It may be located in the heart of Mexico, but Clandestino (19 Zacateros, 415 152 1623) carries a little bit of something from nearly every corner of the globe. Look for furniture from both Mexico and China, home accessories from India, local folk art, colorful jewelry, and quality antiques. Check out the small collection of ex-votos, small prayer scrolls.

EL NUEVO MUNDO
17 San Francisco
San Miguel Allende
Tel: 415 152 6180

Located near the El Jardín Principal, El Nuevo Mundo is the place to go for small souvenirs and gifts with a local flavor and reasonable prices: baskets, tarot cards, pottery, papier-mâché dolls, napkins and tablecloths, woven wire bowls, and more.

MARKETS
San Miguel Allende
Guanajuato

For flea-market fans, the city's daily Mercado de Artesanias is a treasure-trove waiting to be discovered. Set along a three-block strip and entered via the Ignacio Ramirez Market near the Plaza Civica, the Mercado is a great place to find ceramics, leatherwear, antiques, metalware, and other regional specialties.

A clutch of small local shops is upping the ante in the precious jewelry market. Among the best are David (53 Zacateros, 415 152 0056), where designs are hewn from silver and inlaid with semiprecious stones such as onyx and turquoise, and Piedras (14 Tanque, Colonia Atascadero, 415 154 9193). The brainchild of United States expat William Harris and partner Luis Pantoja, the line includes earrings, pins, and necklaces. In addition, Elizabeth Noel (6 Callejón de Los Muertos, 415 152 6052) sells a nice selection of Bolivian and Guatemalan jewelry, by appointment only, from her home.

SAZÓN
San Miguel Allende
Guanajuato

Along with organizing culinary classes and market tours, Sazón (22 Correo, 415 154 7671) also serves as one of the city's top tableware boutiques. Stop in for a well-edited selection of handblown glass as well as pottery pieces by noted local Gorky Gonzáles.
